The challenge

Most global fisheries and aquaculture operations are managed using settings designed for historical climate conditions. As oceans warm and disease pressures increase, these legacy approaches are becoming increasingly misaligned with emerging risks, investment horizons, and operational realities.

Our approach

Reenvision partnered with a philanthropist seeking to understand how wild fisheries and new aquaculture ventures could be made more resilient in a warming ocean. We conducted an integrated assessment of climate vulnerability across Australian and Asia‑Pacific fisheries and aquaculture systems — examining ecological exposure, operational risk, regulatory readiness, and investment feasibility. This work identified where climate‑ready practices already exist, where adaptation is lagging, and where targeted investment could accelerate resilience and long‑term sustainability.

The outcome

The assessment provided a clear picture of how climate‑ready current fisheries and aquaculture ventures are, and where vulnerabilities are most acute — including warming trends, disease risks, and operational constraints. These insights now underpin a new philanthropic investment strategy focused on supporting climate‑safe fisheries and aquaculture ventures across multiple countries and sectors, guiding capital toward opportunities with the greatest potential for resilience, innovation, and long‑term impact.
